about

Back out of the box and seemingly shooting rainbow-haloed fractal rays from each fingertip, DKAPZ, A.K.A. David Kaplowitz, experimental electronics explorer, turns a new, wildly dynamic corner with his new release, 3. The Union of Terrified Scientists.

Returning, in part, to his psychedelic dancefloor roots, this EP is filled with creations that are balanced on a knife-edge between relentless acid-bangery and ice-pick sharp, gleaming minimalism shot through with old school junglisms.

Rhythms are clattery and sinewy; harmonies bleeding through on filter-modulated breezes. It’s the same urban dread that we’ve come to expect from DK, but this time it’s perceived through a Lysergic prism.

Taken as a whole, 3. The Union of Terrified Scientists is a bit of an odyssey. The opening four tracks are propulsive and edgily complex, the barest bones of melodies glimpsed in the melee. But these give way to the extended aural assault-course of ‘Antichronic’, where deep space meltdown and percussive paranoia eventually recede into a blissful, sequenced nirvana.

And this all comes wrapped in a production job that’s filled with notably more space and self-assurance than previous work. It begs to be heard on a proper sound system or through a top-end set of speakers. But whatever; it’ll still sound fucking great on your laptop.

about

DKAPZ London, UK

"Wicked selection of mad as fuck rhythm and texture. Vibes." An attempt at walking the line between the visceral and the cerebral. Embracing both minimalism and a disregard for the formalities of technological boundaries, at times it's a brutal gut-punch of sound, at others it's a playful exploration of the oddities of rhythm. Call it what you like; it's pretty much batshit crazy. ... more
